Morgan Bettinger’s Career Journey:

Morgan Bettinger’s professional career is yet to commence as she recently concluded her academic pursuits at UVA in 2021, earning a degree in psychology. Throughout her tenure at UVA, she engaged in a diverse array of extracurricular pursuits. These endeavors encompassed her active participation in the Student Council, the Honor Committee, and the Inter-Sorority Council.

Moreover, she dedicated her time to her role within the Kappa Delta sorority, where she played an integral part. Furthermore, her academic journey was marked by significant contributions. She lent her expertise as a research assistant at the UVA Department of Psychology, delving into the realm of psychological studies. In addition, she took on the role of a teaching assistant at the UVA Curry School of Education and Human Development, where she played a vital role in educational initiatives.

However, her path was significantly altered by a controversial incident that unfolded in the summer of 2020. During this time, she faced accusations from a prominent student activist, Zyahna Bryant, who alleged that Morgan had made violent threats toward a group of Black Lives Matter demonstrators in Charlottesville.

According to Bryant, Morgan purportedly drove past police barricades and made remarks insinuating that the protesters could serve as “speed bumps.”

In the wake of these accusations, Morgan endured a barrage of online harassment, received death threats, and faced calls for her expulsion from UVA. Despite vehemently denying the allegations, Morgan explained that her comment was a lighthearted remark made to a dump truck driver who was obstructing the road. Her intention was not to harm or offend anyone and she had no knowledge of the protest until she encountered it.

These inquiries yielded “insufficient evidence” to substantiate Bryant’s claim regarding the “speed bumps” remark. However, despite the absence of concrete evidence against her, Morgan faced university sanctions for alleged violations of the Standards of Conduct.

She was subject to an expulsion in abeyance, which allowed her to graduate but precluded her from returning to campus or engaging in university-related activities. Morgan pursued appeals against these sanctions but faced rejection by ODOS.

In August 2021, Morgan took legal action by filing a lawsuit against UVA and various administrators. In her legal action, she asserted that her First Amendment rights and due process rights had been violated. She also maintained that ODOS had intentionally meddled with the investigations and enforced sanctions that were arbitrary and capricious in nature.

Her legal proceedings aim to secure compensation for the emotional distress she endured, the harm inflicted on her reputation, and the expenses incurred during the legal process.
